Someone Worth Dying For

At some point during our lifetimes, many of us struggle with feelings that we are unloved and perhaps even unlovable. Whether as children, young adults, adults in our prime, or adults in our waning years, we crave the connectedness that comes from being loved, and we want desperately to share our love with others. Knowing that we are loved brings feelings of peace and joy, while its absence brings feelings of uselessness and hopelessness.

As beings created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27), we were made to love and be loved. It is as vital to us as oxygen and as necessary as food and water. Without it, we waste away – physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually.

This is why God wants us to know that He loves us. Others may come and go, and love may seem all too elusive at times, but God loves us – and has always loved us – and will always love us – with the purest and most perfect form of love in the entire universe.

And He loved us even when we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

For some, all of this may seem too good to be true. Perhaps it is just something we say to each other, and ourselves, when we cannot bear the thought that we are completely alone. Perhaps it is just the ultimate mirage in the desert of human loneliness.

But then the cross of Jesus Christ appears.

Initially, it may be at a distance, but it grows ever larger as it moves from the horizon of our lives to the very center of our existence.

Are you worth God’s time? Are you worth God’s love?

Worth dying for, says His Son.

And the Son of God did just that – for you.

Remember, no one sent Jesus to earth to die for us. He was a gift from God the Father (John 3:16), and He laid down His life for us freely, willingly, and voluntarily (John 10:17-18).

And you – yes, you, one special life in a trillion and one unique soul in the history of the cosmos – were worth dying for.

This is the message, the simple but profound message, of the cross of Jesus Christ.

You are never alone.

You are never unloved.

As you continue to prepare yourself for Easter (Resurrection Sunday) this year, please rejoice in knowing that, regardless of what others may say about you or do to you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is here for you. And He loves you.

Because to Jesus, you are – and were – and will always be – worth dying for.
