To me, the creation story found in Chapter 1 of the Book of Genesis is both exciting and inspiring:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3, NKJV)
These verses are exciting because they show the majesty and power of Almighty God.
They are inspiring because they show how anything – anything – is possible for Him.
Many people read Genesis 1:1-3 and understand it to be the beginning of time and space as we know it. And what a moment it must have been! Matter and energy created from nothing, and light created where no light had ever been. Scientists still debate it, atheists still deny it, and we still embrace it.
We are the children of the Most High God.
Sons and daughters of the Creator of the universe and everything it contains.
But don’t overlook what Genesis 1:1-3 means for you individually. It is more than just the beginning of all creation; it is the beginning of all hope.
If your life at times feels empty or meaningless, then you know exactly what the author of the first words in the Word of God was trying to convey: “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:2a).
But God was there, watching and waiting for the right moment: “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2b).
God did not need anything, but through His Spirit – the Holy Spirit – He created everything: “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light” (Genesis 1:3).
Light from darkness.
Form from formlessness.
Fullness from void.
And God wants to do the same for you.
Your Heavenly Father wants to bless you with His grace and mercy. He wants you to experience – not just read about or hear about but fully experience – true life in Him. He wants you to feel His love through His Son, Jesus Christ, and He wants you to know that anything, and everything, is possible through His Holy Spirit.
All you need to do is say “yes.”
Today, open the doors of your life and the windows of your heart to God. Acknowledge Him as your King and Jesus Christ as your Savior. Give up the empty promises of this fallen world, and let the Lord of heaven and earth create you anew, bringing peace out of worry and hope out of despair.
Let God do for you what He once did for all of creation: “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light!”
